How to Replace a Toilet Seat — Quick Guide
Replacing or installing a toilet seat is a simple DIY task that usually takes just a few minutes and a few basic tools.
Why Replace Your Toilet Seat?
- It’s cracked, loose, or outdated
- You’re upgrading to a new style or soft-close model
- You’re renovating your bathroom
Do All Toilet Seats Fit the Same?
No. Toilets come in different shapes, so always measure before buying:
- Distance between the bolt holes (typically 155mm)
- Width of the toilet bowl
- Length from front to bolt holes
Safety First
Toilets can harbor germs. Always:
- Wear rubber gloves
- Use antibacterial spray before and after
- Wash your hands thoroughly after the job
Tools You’ll Need
- Adjustable wrench or pliers (for loosening wing nuts)
- Flathead screwdriver (to remove caps)
- Optional: WD-40 for rusty bolts
Removing the Old Seat
- Pop off plastic caps covering the bolts
- Use a wrench to loosen wing nuts underneath
- Lift off the seat
- Spray WD-40 if stuck, or carefully cut through if necessary
Installing the New Seat
- Align the seat and insert bolts through the holes
- Adjust until centered
- Tighten the nuts (not too tight, especially plastic ones)
- Snap on any decorative caps
Seat Styles
Toilet seats come in many colors, shapes, and even patterns (like animal prints). Whether you prefer classic white or something bold, there’s a style for every bathroom.
